The houses had been in use as furriers and although many original features remained, many others had been lost. The houses had been laterally converted through the party wall at each floor. The brief, to fit the needs of the owners who would each be taking a flat was to continue with this layout but convert the houses into three flats and a basement and ground floor maisonette. This was a controversial brief as the Spitalfields Trust were anxious to return the houses to their former state.
The highlight of the scheme was the discovery of the weaver’s loft. When the corrugated iron was removed from the top floor it revealed a series of studs with notches in them. This led to a study of the structure with English Heritage and their archeologist who together with C&PA established the original fenestration configuration. This was made up of leaded lights in iron frames and infill panels of timber. This was reconstructed to match existing exactly.
