G.Kelly’s Pie & Mash was founded in 1939 by George Kelly and has remained in the family since, becoming part of the unique fabric of East London and the Roman Road Market.
Clements & Porter Architects oversaw this extensive re-building and refurbishment of the shop with a new bakehouse built to modern standards. The original tiled design of the interior has been re-instated, with new marble tables and a marble faced counter. The shopfront has been carefully restored, re-instating features of the original 1930’s shopfront, including the marble stall riser and awning. Visitors can now expect to step inside a brand-new shop, whilst feeling in familiar surroundings.
The project also included the creation of 3 new flats with a central courtyard above the shop and bakehouse. The front first floor has been completely rebuilt to match the existing with a new traditional slate mansard and lead clad dormers facing Roman Road. This maintains the integrity of the original Victorian terrace in this Conversation Area, however, a new modern intervention faces the street at the back of the shop forming a new maisonette flat.
