The Troxy Cinema is a Landmark building. As its owners claim “the Troxy has been helping East London have good time since 1933 and we have no intention of stopping”. Designed by George Coles (for Hyams and Gale,) it was one of the largest of its kind. Following the closure of the cinema in 1960, the building was subsequently used as a rehearsal space for the Royal Opera House and then as a Mecca bingo hall.
The owners commissioned C&PA to lead the refurbishment of the historic fabric and to convert the building into an events space including full restoration of the façade with repairs to the faience work. This restoration is a continuing project with C&PA advising on and delivering the specialist conservation work. Current work involves introducing a mezzanine bar area and rearranging the back stage area to restore the stage area to its original form.
In addition, C&PA have worked with the Cinema Organ Society on the installation of an original 1930’s Wurlitzer cinema organ into the wings of the Troxy as part of a £250K conservation project.
