At Star Street, C&PA transformed a forgotten light well at the rear of a Grade II Listed Victorian terrace into a new winter garden accessed from the ground floor and basement.
The design solution involved 2 interventions alongside general restoration of the historic brickwork. Firstly a large glazed canopy was install at the top of the well to provide shelter from the weather while a concealed perimeter maintained ventilation to the well. The structure is supported from 2 steel beam minimising the impact on the existing structure. Secondly a slender steel stair and landing were installed to provide access from the ground floor in the basement well. The stair is a feature in the space and the minimal design reduced impact on the original building fabric.
C&PA led the design of the well achieving listed building consent and carrying out the detailed technical design for construction and building control.
